Consultants
are typically in charge of behavioral programming. The consultant
will base their reccomendations on Applied Behavior Analysis technologies.
Please see the resources page for
information on the various ways that Applied Behavior Analysis can
be used. They will:
- conduct assessments
- write and read reports
- set goals for therapy
- provide training and
troubleshooting for home programs
Most consultants have
at least a Master's degree and several years of behavioral training.
The autism special interest group of the Association for Behavior
Analysis recommends guidelines
for consumers. Read the guidelines carefully and ask questions of
your consultant.
At present, there are
no legal requirements for being a behavioral consultant in Maryland.
The Behavior Analyst Certification
Board is a good place to start; however, not all BCBAs are qualified
autism consultants.
I have two different models
that I use, depending upon your location and preferences. One is a
group meeting model with home visits quarterly. The other is monthly
home visits. In either case:
- Team meetings and
home visits will typically last in the range of about 2hrs.
- I will come and do
initial training and then supervise the programs, make changes,
etc…and keep in contact with you through phone, email, and
my internet site.
- I will ask you and
members of your team to use my internet site for training and
other resources.
- Each family has a
protected interactive area in my site to read notes, ask questions
and interact with all of the members of the team.
- I will also observe
sessions and give direct feedback to the therapists.
- There’s a lot
of data collection. Some your therapists will do and some I will
ask you to do. We don’t make changes without data!
- I will give you strategies
for communication training and interacting with your child.
- I may ask you to
do something that might be counterintuitive or contradicts what
others might have told you. If you have questions/concerns, ASK.
I do respect your opinions!
- Please remember that
NONE of us has all of the answers. I can’t predict the outcome,
but I will do my very best to help you and your child reach his/her
potential.
